Lore

The universe the game takes place in is large and varied. However, there are some binding rules, a map, and a system of magic. It's not necessary to read over these, but a Hooden will better fit into Ohote if you have a general sense on how things work.

World Basics

This world is not centered around Hooden- they are simply a consequence of the wide array of forms that magic can take. In reality, humans, earthworms, slime molds, and sweet potatoes are all beings of magic as well, and each has their place in this tangled web of magical connection. All life stems from the same Font of magic, which comes from the plane of Ohote (soil) itself. The New Gods have divvied up this basal magic into separate components, called Elements or Affinities, which everything on the plane has a specific connection with.

Magic aside, however, Ohote much resembles our own Earth. The landscapes would look right at home next to our own, and animals and plants, though they may seem archaic to our eyes, would not arouse too much suspicion if they turned up on our own planet. Where things change is in the Fey, powerful elemental beings that exemplify their Affinities: things like dragons, gnomes, and phoenixes. Humans, too, are different, each displaying evidence of their own affinities, perhaps in the form of antlers, crystalline body parts, or any number of magical expressions. Humans are probably more variable than any other being- a favor gifted by the biased New Gods.

Ohote is vast, and holds as many unique locations as our own. There are official mapped locations, but don’t be afraid to explore and create your own spaces, special areas, and villages. Like our own planet, there’s room for infinite special places as small as a vernal pool and as large as a granite mountain.

The tone and style of the ARPG should not be “modern” in the sense that there is electricity, cars, guns, or anything relatively recent. In fact, the rough style of the world mirrors our own before the “common era”, and perhaps even older than that. Animals may mimic more ancient forms- mastodons, pliohippus, and moas, and though technology is variable among different groups and their ecological surroundings, keep in mind that it should roughly correlate with stone, bronze, or iron-age earth.

How are Hooden made?

It’s unknown when hooden first originated, and who was the first to construct one. The basic recipe has been passed down since that point, though, and remains mostly the same: The hide of a horse, mule, or donkey, something to fill this skin with, to give it shape, the head imbued with the affinities needed for this hooden, some string to sew it shut, a font of magical power, and the inscription, lining the skin. The runes take parts from the necromantic script, the script for summoning, and the script for binding essence. As such, it takes a trained mage to make.
